So many of the questions that I am asked by Graduates start with that sneaky phrase, “ should I …?”. And my answer, more often than not, is “absolutely YES”!
Should I write to such and such company?; should I call so and so?; should I forward my CV to this person?; should I try to arrange a meeting with this contact?. The answer to so many of these questions is “go for it … yes”!
There is little to loose; the practice of just overriding that self doubt is valuable and becomes easier over time; and, you never know what doors you will potentially open for yourself unless you keep knocking!
Take action in a manner that is upbeat and professional. This means that you do your research beforehand; know who you are contacting and why; and know something about the organisation that that person is a part of.
Let the ‘should I’ be the spring board to ‘I am …”. I am writing to so and so …; I am making that call; I am sending my Resume to …; I am connecting with ….
Also remember, that people do enjoy offering advise and guidance. People like to talk about their work and what is important to them. People appreciate being listened to. People like to help where they can.
