Why does your sleep really matter …

I am only just learning as to how valuable sleep is … and why my habit of flicking through social media at the end of an evening is just a very unhelpful habit when looking at overall health and vitality.  It is easy to think that we can gain hours in our day by cutting back of those hours of sleep.  Here are some pointers as to why sleep really matters:

  • You are able to manage your day better;
  • Your mind is able to organise and store your learning;
  • Your hormones are balanced and are able to do their jobs well;
  • With the above in mind, you put yourself in charge!;
  • Your thinking is quicker and more accurate;
  • Your creative mind is at peace enough to be work out challenging ideas;
  • You are alert and present;
  • You feel well;
  • Your immune system remains strong;
  • You are more accurate;
  • Your are so much happier;
  • You are more energised;
  • Decision making is easier;
  • Being well rested shows in your face and eyes – you look refreshed;
  • You are more capable to work effectively;
  • You are more even tempered;
  • You are more insightful;
  • You can get on and do what you need to do without the foggy brain;
  • You need less ‘stimulants’ to get going;

And, some tips for helping with better sleep:

  • Live a full day enjoying fresh air and exercise;
  • Enjoy your coffee and tea – but from lunch time enjoy the ‘de caffeinated’ variety;
  • Go to bed at a reasonable time.  An hour before midnight is worth 2 after midnight.  Aim for a good 7 to 8 hours of restorative sleep.
  • Keep all the flashing and buzzing lights OUT of your room – keep it dark;
  • An eye mask is a winner!;
  • Read a good book before sleeping (say no to looking at your social media!);
  • Breath really deeply and rhythmically and relish doing so;
  • Interestingly, time in the early morning sun helps to regulate your natural sleep patterns – so get up at a good time and start your day intentionally;
  • Tell your mind that sleep is upon you;
  • Intend for yourself to have a nourishing and restorative sleep – expect it;
  • Be grateful for good sleep and all of its benefits;
  • And, know that you are well able to train yourself for sleep.
