Developing your Curriculum Vitae is an ongoing process. This CV is the ‘introductory card’ to potential employers, inspiring them to want to meet with and interview you. This document shows your journey thus far and hence why it is ever evolving.
I would love for you to approach this challenge of putting together your CV with energy, focus and perhaps even excitement. Your CV is personal to you and thus worth taking time to ensure that the layout and what it says needs to say reflects you well – and that of the industry that you are wanting to be working in. This is why working on your CV deserves time and care.
Inorder to offset any procrastination in getting started, set your timer for 7 minutes … and just start. Then do another 7 minutes without stopping. Momentum will take over. You are wanting to get as much relevant information onto hard copy so that you then have something to work from when needing to send through a detailed but targeted CV.
Some reasons to appreciate time spent working on this document include:
- It gets you to remember and recall things that you have accomplished thus far;
- Things that you have done are documented and you see the value;
- You will notice a ‘theme’ that will give you clues as to what you enjoy and are good at;
- It shows up areas that you might consider developing (ie studying further);
- Gets you to consider “what you are about” – and this in turn helps you to speak about yourself eloquently during your interview;
- It gives you a focus from which you can consider your ‘transferrable skills;
- And, It ensures that you are ready should a possible opportunity for an interview arise.
As the year draws to a close, it is also a time to reflect – and developing your CV gives you the opening to do so.
