The joys of interviews …

Interviews, approached with an excitement of possibilities, have the potential to be an  enriching process.  They offer you the opportunity to think clearly about what your particular gifts are, prompting you to recognise the real value that you have to offer.

In essence, your interview is just a conversation.  The focus of this conversation is on you,  determining as to whether you are a good fit for the interviewing organisation.  Their ‘problem’ is that they have a position that needs to be filled and they want to find out if you are that right person.  It is through YOUR thorough and insightful  preparation that will enable you tell them that you are – and do so in a way that is absolutely genuine.

As your prepare for each interview, set your intention to be excited and very curious.  Even if you have already had many interviews without being offered a position, focus in on this next one with fresh optimism.  Learn too as much as you can beyond the actual position you are being interviewed for and also see what the competition is about.

Below is a list of some guiding questions for you to think about:

  • What do you already know about the interviewing organisation?
  • What is their ‘tag line’ about?  What do they say about themselves?
  • Why do you think that you would be a good fit for this position?
  • Why would you like the opportunity to work for them?
  • What would you bring to the role?  What makes you an excellent fit?
  • What relevant work or life experience have you had thus far that is great for the role?
  • In what ways would you be a real asset to this company?
  • What 5 words would you use to describe yourself?
  • If asked ‘tell us about yourself’, what would you tell them?, ensuring that this links into the role on offer.
  • What stories do you have from your past experiences that demonstrate that you are committed to being diligent in your work; can work effectively within a team; are able to follow through on projects; and, willing to keep learning.
  • Where would you like to be 3 years from now?
  • How do you fill your spare time?  What interesting hobbies can you talk about?

It can be very useful to practice possible answers out aloud.  This is a way to make talking about yourself become familiar.  EXPECT your interview to go well too.  And if those butterflies are taking over,  remind yourself that they are there because you are EXCITED.
