The truth of this statement is that we really do not know how our endeavours will go – not until we actually start them. No matter how small the project or task, unless we make a start we just really do not know what the outcome will be.
This is why this statement, “I don’t know … but I will give it a go!”, just resonated with me so instantly. How often do we just get stuck and immobilised at the “I don’t know”, “I am so unsure”, “I can’t” …
BUT, just by following through on that initial thought with a “ but I will give it a go” or “let me just try anyway” liberates the stuckness and opens up the mind to just getting on with the task at hand.
This is such a useful tool and so wonderfully simply.
As an example. Last week I met with a graduate who is applying for internships. He is unsure as to exactly what the interviewers are looking for and he does not know whether he has the qualifications that they are interested in. BUT, unless he actually becomes busy and focused on filling in the forms, writing a well thought out personal statement and turning up for the interivews, he will never know.
The knowledge that many others are also applying for the same place as you is potentially off putting. And, if you start paying attention to the stories that you are telling yourself (most of which are absolutely not true at all!) You might find that you will never give it a go at all.
Remember, your brain is there to protect you. With that, your mind will easily come up with convincing and persuasive stories to NOT take action. So, KNOW that and just start. As I always remind students, start with ridiculously small tasks and you will find that as you get going your momentum will increase. And though you do not know what the outcome will be … there will be an outcome!
