Interviews really are just conversations and another way for a school to get to know a potential pupil beyond the paperwork that they already have.
I think that so much of the anxiety around school interviews is because they are ‘unscientific’. As parents, you will probably be sitting in on the meeting and listening to your child fielding a variety of questions. And you do not know what the responses are going to be – at all!
Furthermore, there is no telling as to exactly what questions will be asked but there are enough obvious avenues that your child can think about now so that talking about him or herself becomes really familiar.
Remind your child that this interview is just a CONVERSATION. Because the focus of the chat is around your child’s experiences of school and life, there really are no ‘wrong’ answers. What is EXPECTED, however, if for your child to be GENUINE. Your child is not the same as another child and comes with wonderful qualities that every school year group needs.
Interviewing schools are experts on children. They understand that the interview situation is new to them and it is the role of the interviewer to bring out the best in your child. Also, senior schools want your child to enjoy their time with them. They are being interviewed as well!
One part of this process that so easily get missed out on is around the ‘mindset’ and teaching your child to think carefully about the vocabulary they use when expressing themselves. It is easy for children to just say “these interviews are so stressful”. This statement in turn triggers an anxious response. Using optimistic language is empowering.
- I am EXPECTING myself to approach my interviews well prepared and calm.
- These interviews are an exciting challenge and I am EXPECTING to have a really good conversation.
- I talk very happily with my friends and family so I know that I can chat openly during my interview.
- I am excited to be able to express as to why I like this school so much and why it would be a great fit for me.
- This interview is really exciting. I wonder what questions I will be asked. I know that I will handle the questions with ease.
- I am EXPECTING to give of my best at this interview, and I am EXPECTING to really enjoy the discussion.
- I am thoroughly prepared and I am excited to tell the interview why their school is so great and a good fit for me!
In EXPECTING the interview to go really well your child will be much more open to engaging enthusiastically, happily expressive and having a great experience.
